The north facing site had been excavated by a previous owner, creating a rock platform approximately 3metres below the road level. The opportunity to design a simple, single level pavilion at the lower level with the roof over, accommodating the main entrance and garaging at street level. The remainder of the concrete roof surface is planted to minimize the visual impact of the building from the street and to provide insulation to the spaces below. The entrance to the main living area is via a steel stair in a double volume space over the main living area. The accommodation is open plan with full opening sections to both sides of the narrow plan form providing an opportunity to utilize natural cross ventilation as well as a low energy strategies for building services.
